What is roleplay acting?

A roleplay actor is specialized in acting within simulation-based learning. This could be roleplay within a training, assessment or coaching program. Or it could be acting in related work formats such as regietheater (theatre format where participants get to direct the actors) or in educational ‘serious’ games.

Position
A roleplay actor is trained to work with acting techniques, stage and audience. The actor stays in character and responds to the observed behavior of the other person. However, unlike in theatre, the actor is not the center of attention. The roleplay actor operates in service of the participant’s learning process, so that the participant can develop themselves. Another key difference with a theatre actor is the requirement for the roleplay actor to give concrete, constructive feedback to the participant.

Employability
A roleplay actor is not a trainer. The trainer determines the content of the training and the training model, and therefore also the context for the roleplay in which the roleplay actor operates. Roleplay is one of many tools that can be used in a training to facilitate the participants’ learning process. Thus, the roleplay actor is in service of the trainer and the participants. A professional roleplay actor brings along knowledge and skills that can support a trainer with the preparation, execution and evaluation of his/her training.

In short, a roleplay actor is someone who:

  • Has the ability to bring realness and relatability to a simulation scenario;
  • Reacts genuinely to the behavior exhibited by the participant;
  • Supports the participant and guides the roleplay, so that the participant can work on their learning objectives;
  • Gives constructive and concrete feedback on the basis of behavior – feeling – consequence statements. The aim is for the feedback to bring awareness to what the participant’s behavior evokes in another person.
  • If needed, supports a trainer in determining the learning objectives, training models, work formats and communication models.
